Find Your Motivation

When people want to lose weight, or get healthy, or their doctor tells them to start walking, they must find what motivates them, or nothing works.

One of my friends decided her entire family is more active than she is and she wants to keep up with them this summer.  So she's doing the Couch-to-5K plan.  I should note that she can walk for about 20 miles, but wanted to do more, so that's what she's doing.  I'll be honest; I'm not sure I care about my family that much :)  It sounds exhausting, but that motivates her, and she's doing it.  I think this is week 4 for her, and I'm so proud of her!

Another friend was motivated by someone's story.  That's all - just the story of a girl in India.  But it made her run a HALF MARATHON!!!  And I know this woman -- she was one of my bridesmaids.  Trust me; this was not a walk in the park for her :)  I encourage you to read her story here.  It's so well-written; it's just fun to read.  But it's also meaningful and encouraging and possibly even motivational, if you were looking for that (take time to read her first post, which is linked at the top of the finish line post, and bring some Kleenex).  And it has pictures!

Anyway, I've become one of those annoying people who exercise and now want everyone else to, too.  Years ago I accused my brother of being a running evangelist, and now it's my turn.  I'm not really trying to get you to run. I just want people I care about to be healthy and live longer!  Is that so awful - for me to be selfish that way?

Find your motivation.  Which is a lot less lame than "follow your bliss," which cracks me up every time I hear it.

  1. Johnnie and I have been walking with the kids this month. All together we do about a mile. Unfortunately, since the walking kid is under 2, we are only doing a 60 minute mile (lots of rocks, dandelions, puppies, and sticks to slow things down). I'm not sure how beneficial it is, but at least we aren't sitting. ;-)

And PS: I'm so happy for you!!

  2. I think half of it is getting out and moving. There is NOTHING wrong with a 60-minute mile, especially when you have little people helping you :)

(maybe I can get my neighbor to pay attention to rocks, dandelions, puppies and sticks today on our walk!)

Thanks for your PS! I feel your encouragement!

It's been a while.  A long while.  To catch you up, I broke my leg on the descent from a 14er in June.  It was a hard summer, but I&...
